Save money on your property tax bill

What’s the number one thing Chicago homeowners forget to do to save money on their property tax bill? I see this happen all the time! If the home you live in is your primary residence, Chicago and Cook County offer some savings on your property tax bill through homeowner exemptions. There are several options that may apply to you.

The easy option that everyone can apply for is the Homeowners Exemption. That exemption alone will save you hundreds on your tax bill (the average homeowner saves $973 bucks annually with this exemption alone!). Other available exemptions include exemptions for senior citizens, veterans, and persons with disabilities, as well as credits for homeowners who invested in energy-efficient improvements to their property like solar panels and such.

Is it too late to apply for a homeowners exemption? Nope. You can apply today AND, once approved, the city will send you a check for any overpayments you have made over the last three years!

To see if you qualify for any available homeowner exemptions, check out the Cook County’s Assessor Office website for details. Take the five minutes to explore this page; the effort and education will be worth it. Cheers!
